Forumregels

Livestream Round-Up (28/07/2020)

Brand new quest Desperate Measures is now out in the wild and we caught up with some of the developers involved in bringing it to life! Be warned - there are some mild spoilers for this new content, so click away if you haven't finished the story just yet.

Music

Desperate Measures features 11 tracks. Mod Ian created six of these, focusing on big, grand and comedic themes for the character of Thok. Meanwhile Mod Surma was behind the remaining five, primarily writing music for Kerapac.
  • For the track 'An Echo Throughout Time', Content Developer Mod Rowley said he wanted a relaxed, meditative atmosphere, influenced by Buddhism.
  • With the song 'Unravelling the Past', Mod Surma says that the trick was to create an ambient track that was catchy so that it didn't just become background noise.
  • Jagex's audio developers don't normally use electric guitar when creating music for RuneScape, but Mod Surma felt that the tune Kerapac's Lair needed to sound meaty in order to match the huge environment.
  • The Caged Guardian fight is related in some ways to the Elite Dungeons 2 and 3 content, so Mod Surma spoke to Mod Slippers, the composer for those areas, to ensure that this new song had tonal similarities.
"All the music was made from home. It's a very different working environment. When you're recording instruments, you might like a booth to keep outside noises out. Fortunately, my guitar was really loud and drowned out all the other sound." ~ Mod Surma

Development

Due to COVID-19, the entire Desperate Measures team continues to work remotely. This presented a number of challenges to overcome, such as adapting to communicating over Slack and Zoom.
  • The quest was developed by Mod Raven, Mod Rowley and Mod Shrew, with Mod Orion joining to work on the boss fight and some other aspects of the story.
  • The team had a lot of fun with placeholder text when designing Desperate Measures. Much of this was stupid jokes, including Mod Shrew having Kerapac rap, but the developers actually found this helpful when working out the tone of the quest.
  • The stampede section was influenced by the Dungeon Defenders game, with players having to strategically place characters around an arena.
  • This part of the quest featured a bug where a dinosaur would spawn and rather than head towards the archaeologists, it went and simply killed both Charos and Thok!
"We're not individual people authoring something. More or less everything we create is a group activity in some way. A lot of the process of designing or developing something is about bouncing ideas off people, but that's harder to do when you're not in a shared environment. It was tricky. Video meetings or text chat is not as organic as speaking in real life." ~ Mod raven
