Dev Blog: OSRS Mobile
Afbeelding
It has almost been a month to the day that we announced Old School was coming to mobile. Naturally you had a lot of questions surrounding the announcement of what is arguably the biggest thing to ever happen to Old School RuneScape. There has been a constant clamour to know more about just how it's going to work, and understandably so, porting an expansive MMORPG to a mobile device is an incredibly ambitious project.
Afbeelding

Touch Experience
Our core focus when porting Old School to mobile was recreating the authentic desktop experience designed by the Gowers. This blog will answer questions you might have regarding the game controls, it will also offer an insight into the considerations we've had in mind throughout development, and we'll also talk Beta testing.
Afbeelding

Controls
When RuneScape was born, many of its controls were designed similarly to how you might interact with a webpage; with left-clicks to perform actions and right-clicks to create menus of actions, it was important that the game controls were intuitive and felt natural as back then you were playing within a browser.

We want to make OS Mobile feel as much like you'd naturally expect from a mobile app as possible; sliding in a direction to rotate the camera, pinching to zoom and quick touch gestures to interact with entities or open a menu.

Ultimately, we're aiming to have multiple options available for players to allow for customisation based on how you like to play the game; and when we move into Beta we'll have these prototypes available for players to try out and provide feedback on.
Afbeelding

Keyboard
One key difference between Desktop & Mobile is how a keyboard operates. Instead of a physical keyboard you have a digital one, appearing on demand in your screen space. Depending on how you like to play Old School, the keyboard can be totally irrelevant or incredibly valuable, so it's important to us that the keyboard be both intuitive and available on demand for you. With that in mind, we'll be making the keyboard automatically appear when you select a text entry field, such as the chat window, and have it be quickly accessible via a simple gesture, should you want it to for other scenarios like menu shortcuts. In addition, we're adjusting and amending various interfaces and HUDs to ensure they are not covered up by the on-screen keyboard.
Afbeelding

Main Game Screen Interface
One of the biggest differences between the Mobile & Desktop clients is the layout of the main game screen interface. In our current iteration, we've moved the chat window to the top and split the side panel into two and placed the buttons on either side of the game frame, with the mini-map staying where it is.

The reasons for this are straightforward; native mobile keyboards can only appear from the bottom of the screen, meaning it would hide your chat window when visible; not ideal when it is the most likely place you're going to type. We also considered how you would hold your mobile when playing Old School and how to maximize the amount of game world you can view, which led us to separate the side-panel. Having them split with the option to hide means they're both in optimal positions to touch with your left or your right hand and meant that when collapsed you can see much more of the game. However, designs are not set in stone and the end result will very much depend on your feedback.

Once we're in beta we'll also be prototyping some additional features that should enhance the touch experience and we're looking at various designs to ensure the functionality of features like shift-click to quickly drop items continues to be to possible on Mobile.
Afbeelding

Afbeelding
Here's a screenshot from a very early build of the mobile client. Note that the chatbox is expanded, as is the skills tab.

Afbeelding

Interface Scaling
The world of Mobile & Tablets has resolutions ranging from 640 x 1136 to 1440 x 2048. On the higher resolutions with a smaller screen, the current interface sizes are rather small and can be difficult to accurately navigate with touch, so to address this we'll be bringing Interface Scaling to both mobile and desktop, allowing you to select the size that works best for you.
Afbeelding

Game Feedback
Old School is not great at telling you what you've just done. When you click in the game world you're met with a small X to indicate you've performed an action, which is either red or yellow. On desktop, this kind of works because it can be seen but when using touch, the X is generally hidden behind your finger. To address this, we'll be prototyping several options for players to try out and give feedback on during the beta.
We're still working on designs for these and will reveal more as we get closer to a beta release.
Afbeelding

Game Updates
Weekly game updates are obviously a massive part of the Old School experience, and I know many of you are wondering how they're going to work with the mobile apps.

Our weekly game updates will continue with Mobile and we have the process in place to have app updates readily available when the update is deployed, meaning you won't be disadvantaged or lose out by playing on mobile.

Afbeelding
We don't do enough cheesy squad photos of the team. Here's one of us ignoring one another whilst scaping.

Afbeelding

Compatibility & Performance
Whether you're developing software, applications or games; compatibility is always a key consideration. For desktop computing, you must consider the operating system, such as Windows or Mac OS and the various versions, the processor power, memory usage and graphics power and you'll almost always find a minimum spec for anything you can install. Mobile development follows the same principal; your main operating systems are Android & iOS, and you have a plethora of processors, graphics processors and amounts of memory to consider, which all vary by device, and as you can imagine - there are thousands of different devices!

We'll be doing our best to ensure we have as much compatibility as we can. As with desktop, there will be devices that just don't play nicely or don't work at all, but we will be focusing on making sure the most commonly used devices are top of our list.

We're also working to improve performance in the mobile app to target a broader range of devices, and these improvements will ultimately benefit the desktop client too.
Afbeelding

Beta & Beyond
So, the question I'm sure you all want to know the answer to, when will the beta begin?

Before we can start rolling-out a large-scale Beta, outside of getting the game into a good place we must update a lot of our supporting systems. These include systems like bot detection, player support portals and bug report queues and they all need to not only recognise that you're on a mobile, but provide useful information like your device specifications.

Beyond that we're working with the App Store providers to get the games approved, listed and available for beta; we're almost there with Google Play and are in the early stages with the Apple App Store.

The Mobile Beta will be performed in the live game, meaning that if you're invited, you can use your live account and make progress as usual in the live worlds with other players; so, it's very important we get it right before opening it up.

If all goes as planned we're looking to start rolling-out initial beta invites sometime after RuneFest this year; and once the beta begins we'll continue to iterate upon it. Adding features, fixing issues and addressing feedback, all while adding more players with each iteration.

Beyond the beta there's a lot more we can and want to do and we're sure there's a plethora of new features players will request for the mobile experience specifically... so your feedback has never been more important and we'll be discussing these in future developer blogs!

Interessante ontwikkelingen imo! Slim van Jagex om beta al gelijk te connecten met de reële versie. Hierdoor gaan mensen de app ook echt daadwerkelijk testen.

Fossil Island Kudos Display, the Champion's Cape, and much more.

Originele tekst

With Fossil Island just a week away, Varrock Museum has a handy new display to help you prepare yourself. There's also a chance for elite clues from Barbarian Assault, a prestigious Champion's Cape for those who've defeated the Champion of Champions, a much faster method of charging Iban staves and various other quality-of-life updates from the recent polls.
Afbeelding
Kudos Info Display
The staff of Varrock Museum love to award kudos to those who've helped them with their exibits, but sometimes it's hard to remember exactly which tasks you have and haven't done.
Afbeelding
Visit the information booth on the ground floor of the museum, and use its new Check Kudos option to see what further opportunities you have for earning kudos. Remember, you'll need at least 100 kudos to travel to Fossil Island, and various features on the island itself require even more, so get your kudos up now to ensure you're not locked out next week!
Afbeelding
The info booth will be updated again when Fossil Island arrives, guiding you to the new opportunities for earning even more kudos on the island.
Afbeelding
Champion's Cape
Leon d'Cour, the Champion of Champions, is honoured to bestow his prestigious Champion's Cape upon anyone who's defeated him and completed the Champions Challenge.
Afbeelding
Speak to Larxus, under the Champions' Guild, to claim yours once you've defeated all 11 champions. The cape's just a cosmetic costume for now - looking mint, by the way - but players have suggested a few bonuses it could potentially have in future, and we'd be happy to give it a buff if one's wanted.

The cape can be stored in player-owned house costume rooms and mounted in the Achievement Gallery for the admiration of your guests.

Elite Clue Gamble
Afbeelding
Commander Connad's Barbarian Assault rewards now have a 1/15 chance of including an elite treasure trail clue when you choose a high-level gamble, provided you haven't already got an elite clue at the time. It's awarded as a separate item in addition to his existing rewards.

EDIT: On launch, this chance was 1/10, but has been reduced slightly due to complaints that we'd made it too generous.
Afbeelding
Recharging Iban's Staff
The Dark Mage of West Ardougne is offering a new service of recharging Iban staves, once you've completed Underground Pass, thus saving you from an arduous trek down the Pass itself.
Afbeelding
He's not cheap though - recharging a standard Iban Staff costs 100k coins, and recharging the upgraded version costs 250k coins. Maybe that trip down the Underground Pass feels a bit more appealing now, eh?

Fossil Island Previews
Afbeelding
After years of planning, and months of development, there's just a week left before Fossil Island is upon us. Keep an eye out for the preview livestreams on our official Twitch channel - there's another one coming up on Wednesday 6th September at 3pm UTC.

If you missed one, past broadcasts are uploaded to our YouTube Channel and can also be found on our Twitch channel in the video section!

You've also got one final weekend to work on your entries for the Fossil Island login screen competition.

The Old School log in screen works by taking this image and mirroring it. The submission must be a .jpg, like the linked image. It must also be the same size. The flames and other window boxes will be placed on top of it in the positions they currently adopt in game, they can't be shifted down or sideways. The image is automatically mirrored.

Submissions should be sent to oldschoolcommunity@jagex.com by Monday 4th Sepetember and must:

Include log in screen in the subject of the emailHave your design attached as a JPG Include your RuneScape display name in the body of the email

Make All
We are making some significant progress with Make-All, something that you've all been keen to see in-game as soon as possible.

Question

When we're adding a Make-All option to an existing Make-X interface such as anvil smithing, which order do you prefer for the right-click menus?

Fossil Island

Originele tekst

In their never ending quest for information the curators of Varrock Museum have discovered a new island which they hope will unlock the forgotten past of Gielinor. For those who have completed the Digsite Quest and have 100 Kudos, talk to Curator Haig Halen and start your adventure.

The adventurers' guide to Fossil Island
Volcanic Mine

If you like to go somewhere hot when adventuring then this is the place for you. The majestic arched caverns are a picturesque back drop for the glittering caves where you and your friends can spend your time mining fragments from the special rocks to trade in for ore. First though, make sure you have 180 Kudos and 50 mining. If you die in the mine we have someone who will retrieve your items and keep them for when you return, however any Hardcore Ironmen will lose their status.
Afbeelding
Underwater adventures

Everyone likes to go diving and the unique reefs surrounding Fossil Island give you the opportunity to dust off that old fishbowl helmet you have sitting in the back of the closet and explore a brand new environment. Fortunately the mermaids that inhabit the area seem particularly helpful and will return you to the surface if you run out of air.
Afbeelding
Wyverns

Of course, no adventure is complete without a death defying battle with some monsters. The curators from Varrock Museum have discovered three new breeds of wyverns which had thought to have been extinct up to this point.
Afbeelding
Fossil Island has far too many activities to be mentioned in one guide, but here are a list of other activities you can find.

Help the museum staff by giving them some badly needed amenities and help build their camp using your construction skill. Clean your fossil finds and add them to display cases in Varrock Museum's new floor.Craft a birdhouse trap, fill it with seeds and wait for an unsuspecting cute ball of feathers to be brutally murdered so you can collect its feathers.Track a new type of beast, part animal, part plant. It wanders over a wide range, and can be tricky to follow through the mushroom forest. Once you have found and stunned the beast and harvested it, let it go free to grow new herbs.Any left over fossils from your activities can be chemically treated in the mycellium pool and turned back into enriched bones. These can be used elsewhere on the island to gain prayer XP. If you're bored of chipping away at the same old tree, hunt down the sulliuscep mushroom in the dangerous tar swamp of the island. It doesn't regrow in the same place, being a mushroom it will pop up elsewhere in the swamp.

Fossil Island Feedback

Fossil Island Feedback

Originele tekst

First of all we wanted to thank all of you for the huge amount of feedback from Fossil Island. We have just hot fixed some changes into the game based on this feedback.
Afbeelding
Afbeelding
Wyvern drop tables
We have increased the new wyvern drop tables significantly so they are much more profitable and have also increased the rate at which they drop fossils. We have not touched the skeletal wyvern drop tables at this stage.

We will continue to monitor this over the next week in case we need to make more changes.
Fossil drop rates
Players are getting to the Volcanic Mine already, so we want to collect more data about progression through the island before we change any fossil drop rates other than those mentioned below.
Sulliuscep farming
The tar monsters will now do a little less damage, despawn a little more quickly and the passive creatures will last a little longer. We hope that this will make finding a path through the swamp a little safer and allow those who have not spawned the monsters to be at their mercy for so long.

We have also buffed the drop rate for Sulliuscep caps to 1:250.
Seaweed farming
We have buffed the yield of seaweed slightly and we will be increasing the giant seaweed to soda ash ratio from 1:2 to 1:6 in a future update.
Underwater exploration
We have buffed the thieving chance from 1:10 to 1:8.5 and have decreased the cost of fossils in the mermaid shop by 60%. We have also reduced the amount of tears needed for the merfolk trident by 60% and we are looking to add a new ability to it next week. Over the next week we will do a full review of the items in the mermaid tear shop.
Drift nets
We have reduced the amount of jute you need to make your nets from 10 to 2. Also, you now have a chance of catching a medium clue bottle in the drift net.
Ultra-compost
We have changed the chance of a composted plot getting diseased from 1:7 to 1:10. Don't forget you also get an extra herb if you use ultra-compost

There has been discussion surrounding an ultra-compost version of the Fertile Soil spell and we will start investigating where this fits best for a future poll.
Bird houses
We have doubled the XP for taking down a bird house. We will review this over the next week to see if further changes are necessary. Next week we will also look at either moving the bird house on the south side of the island to somewhere more accessible or making it easier to get to.
Castle Wars
Although this isn't Fossil Island related it is something we should mention here.

We recently made a change to stop players killing themselves in Castle Wars as this was being used by some players to smuggle the flag out of the game, thus ruining it for everyone. This also stopped players from deliberately suiciding to teleport to their Castle Wars spawn location, fully healing and removing any snares or other statuses on their characters. Next week we we are keen top add something to Castle Wars that allows players to do this in a much more safe way.

The Deadman Autumn Invitational, and Winter Season.

Originele tekst

The final area of the Final Hour is announced, plus we have some exciting tweaks for the Winter Season!
Afbeelding
The Deadman Autumn Invitational
Afbeelding
The Deadman Autumn Invitational starts on Monday 18th September at approximately 12pm UTC. We'll put the countdown until the Invitational's kick off on all of our social feeds, plus we'll be posting it right here in the news section too!

The Invitational will conclude with the Final Hour, which we're incredibly excited to host live from RuneFest 2017! We'll be streaming the Final Hour live from twitch.tv/runescape at 4pm UTC.

We've got all our Deadman Mansions streamers playing on stage and the event will be hosted by Mods Archie and Sween! Shoutcasting the Final Hour we have PureSpam and Skiddler.
Afbeelding

RuneFest is jam-packed full of content, including the Final Hour at 4pm UTC. Click here to see the full schedule.
Afbeelding
The Final Area
The final area, where Deadman combatants fight to the death in the final moments, is a key part of each finale. Therefore, RuneFest will play host to a Final Hour that's bigger and more intense than ever before.

In the closing moments of the Final Hour, Falador will be come the center of attention! However, that's not all.

When we reach 200 players, we'll be transporting them to a new, Deadman-only archipelago, where they'll be divided randomly between four islands. On each island, players must fight to the death until just one player remains. The surviving four players will then be brought to the final island, to engage in two 1v1 fights, and a final 1v1 fight to decide the winner.

Those too cowardly to fight to the death on their island will be killed instantaneously.
Afbeelding
The Prize Money
To match the intensity of this Autumn's Invitational we're giving that final player standing a whopping $20,000 in prize money!

In addition to that, the winning team from #DeadmanMansions will get $10,000 to donate to a charity of their choice.
Afbeelding
Deadman Mansions
Afbeelding
From the 17th - 22nd September we'll be hosting Deadman Mansions, powered by ASUS UK, with B0aty and Faux leading the teams! Note that teams will move out of the mansions on the 22nd, but the tournament still continues until the evening (BST) of the 23rd.

In #TeamLUL, captained by Faux, we have Alfie, Raikesy, Sick Nerd, and Torvesta!

And in #TeamCBS (Carried By Soup), captained by B0aty, we have Framed, Mankedupmage, MMORPGrs, and Soup.

Be sure to join us throughout the week on twitch.tv/runescape at 8pm (we'll let you know if any days change!) and also on the RuneScape Twitch Directory where you'll find all 10 players streaming at some point each day.

Cheer on your team on Twitter or on Facebook using their team hashtags and follow us @OldSchoolRS to get regular Mansions updates.

The Deadman Winter Season
We like to keep things fresh in Deadman so for the Winter Season we're making the following changes.

Changes to XP

Outside of safe zones you'll now get 15x XP in combat and 10x XP in other skills. Within safe zones you'll now get 10x XP in combat and 5x XP in other skills.

In the Autumn Season we brought in an XP cap that limited combat XP to 1 million XP per day. We received lots of feedback on this cap, so for the Winter Season we are capping this XP at 500k per day, or 750k per day in Attack and Strength. Hitpoints is not included in this cap.

POH Pools
Afbeelding
The Pools in Player Owned Houses are now unusable if you've been in combat in the last three minutes. This will counter clans using one player's pool for infinite special attack.

Quest Completions

We know that our Deadman players like to quest to gain advantage over their opponents, and that's why we'll only be completing certain quests after week one. This will allow the dedicated players to earn their escapes that come from completing quests.

Desert Treasure will automatically be completed for all players after two weeks, however Ancient Magicks will not be available before that date, even if a player completes the quest for themselves.

Respawn Locations

Part of Deadman has always been that the spawn locations are locked off by clans. This wasn't what we intended with Deadman so therefore we're giving all players the option to respawn at the Grand Exchange. This will allow players to re gear and play Deadman the way it was intended.

With this change we'll also be adding a Deadman Chest at the Grand Exchange so you can loot the chest there.

Deadman Bank Raiding

Raiding your fallen foe's bank after you've killed them is extremely satisfying, there's nothing better than discovering a huge stack of supplies or even a whip or two.

However, we're making some tweaks so that when you die you only lose 80% of your stacked items in your bank, and this only applies to stacks of 5 or more.

For example if you had a stack of 86 sharks and you died to another player, that player would receive 68 sharks, leaving you with 18 sharks. This is always rounded down.

Another example; if you had 4 Abyssal Whips stacked in your bank and you then died to another player, you would lose all 4 Abyssal Whips.
Afbeelding
This change will allow fallen players to fight again, to battle on, and give them the chance to take back their items from their nemesis.

Chinchompas
Afbeelding
We're making a change to these furry little critters so that releasing them doesn't stop a PKer being able to loot it. Hunter just got a little more dangerous!

Saradomin Brews

Saradomin Brews in Deadman are hard to come by. We're going to spice things up a little and add Saradomin Brews to the Wilderness Bosses drop tables!

The dose drops are still to be decided and balanced, but we'll keep you informed throughout the process.

Wilderness Level Indicator

A simple fix, yet one that's been requested many times. We'll be moving the Deadman icon so that you can see which level of the Wilderness you're in.

Door Spam

Unfortunately spamming doors so that they remain closed has become a common tactic in Deadman. Whilst the occasional door slam is great, this goes too far. We'll be making some changes in Deadman, starting with the invitational tournament week, to attempt to mitigate this.

Shop Stock

In Deadman there is a huge rush for supplies. We're going to rework some of the shops stock so that they regenerate faster, allowing for more players to get the supplies they need.
Afbeelding
We hope you enjoy the Deadman Invitational and look forward to the changes for the Winter Season.

Don't forget to tune into Deadman Mansions from 17th - 22rd, plus RuneFest and the Deadman Invitational Final Hour on the 23rd!

Dev Blog: OSRS Mobile

We said we'd keep you updated on the progress of Old School Mobile, and this new developer's blog represents our commitment to providing you with all the information you desire. The emphasis in this blog is on the TLI, or Top Level Interface. To catch up on other information you may have missed, visit the FAQ transcript from July's Mobile Q&A and read the first of our Mobile Dev Blogs in which we covered a number of our key considerations.

With work continuing on Old School Mobile, it's time to start looking at the TLI (Top Level Interface). Having the game run correctly on a mobile device is by far the most important thing to perfect, but not far behind is the interface - the thing you actually use.
Afbeelding
It's certainly a challenge to take a very compact and button-heavy interface such as the one for Old School and create a mobile-friendly adaptation, especially when it needs to be fully functional on a 5 display! In this post, we'll go over an example concept as well as an explanation of the thought process surrounding it.

Kicking things off is a screenshot of Old School Mobile in its current state. The buttons are small, cramped, and prone to fat-fingering. The chatbox is way too small and hard to read with no background. To a new player this is in no way intuitive. Basically - we need to fix this.

Here is the current UI (user interface) as described in the above section.
Firstly, we need to figure out what needs to be displayed perpetually. This includes the information and interface elements which need to be immediately available to the player at a glance. For example, the minimap is absolutely integral to the RuneScape experience and needs to always be available to the player. It isn't something that can be hidden behind a menu. With this in mind we can start to compile a list of elements that we need to have on-screen at all times:

Minimap & compass
World map button
Chat filter buttons
Tabs:
Inventory
Stats
Combat
Spellbook
Prayers
Quests
Equipment
Settings
Social
Logout/World switcher

The Deadman Autumn Invitational is live!

Originele tekst

The Deadman Autumn Invitational

The Deadman Autumn Invitational begins at 12pm UTC! The top 2000 players from our Autumn Season will compete for $20,000 in a week-long frenzy which culminates live at RuneFest on Saturday 23rd September.

Autumn Invitational Clarification
The tournament runs from approximately 12pm UTC 18th September until approximately 5pm UTC 23rd September.

There is no cap on XP gain.

Unskulled players protect all XP lost on death.

There is a 50x rebuild rate on XP in stats that have been lost on death.

A change has been made to prevent door spamming.

Dying with, or dropping, a stack of chinchompas will cause it to appear on the ground, visible to all players.

All rune and arrow shops now restock at a much faster rate. Fletching & crafting supply stores will also restock at a faster rate. Lower tier equipment will restock faster than higher tier equipment, for example: an air rune will restock faster than a death rune.

There is a skull penalty for all players attacking a skulled player. The skull penalty will last for 5 minutes. If you previously had a skull with less than 5 minutes remaining it will revert to 5 minutes. If you previously had a skull with longer than 5 minutes remaining it will remain unchanged.

There is a 1 minute grace period for reasonable kills. This grace period will be a temporary status of immunity from the attacks of other players. A reasonable kill can be defined as killing a player within 30 combat levels of yourself. If killing a combat level higher than yourself you will always receive this grace period of immunity (e.g. a level 90 killing a level 126 will receive the grace period). If you die or attack another player within this minute then you will lose the remaining grace period. The grace period will be lost upon logging out.

The Protect from Magic protection prayer does not halve the duration of the Bind, Snare, and Entangle spells.

POH pools are unavailable for 3 minutes after combat.

Barrows is accessible for the entire week of the tournament.

Raids, Zulrah, and Lava dragons are inaccessible for the entire week of the tournament.

The Final Hour

Afbeelding
The action on the main map will culminate north of Falador until there's around 200 players remaining. See the image above.

When we reach 200 players, we'll be instantly, and automatically, transporting them to a new, Deadman-only archipelago, where they'll be divided randomly between four islands.

The four islands are all multi-combat. When 1 player is left on each island we'll transport them to a single, central island divided into 4 quadrants. See the image below.

One divider will fall, allowing two 1v1 fights to take place. You can think of it as a semi-final.

The final battle will begin when both fights have ended.

As with any other Final Hour, gradually banks will be phased out via fog. There will be no banking during the archipelago stages. You can, however, loot from fallen enemies.
